The House's services are free to our clients who have limited funding for housing, food and other essentials. The House provides clothing, shoes and small household items to our clients in need. The services are free to individuals with limited funding for the aforementioned items regardless of race, creed, gender, age, or size. The House is able to provide these services to our clients through the help of volunteers, donations of new or gently used items, and monetary donations from the community.

How you can help

Regardless of race or creed, gender or ethnicity, age or size, the residents of Washtenaw County receive referrals from various social service agencies or faith-based communities to visit the House by the Side of the Road, although a referral is not required.

Items we always need:

  • Clothing
  • Small household items
  • ​Volunteers/workers
  • ​Monetary donations

We also accept toys, books, dishes, and decorative items; we do not accept furniture or large appliances.

Specific items currently needed:*

  • Winter coats, especially for men and children
  • Sheets and towels
  • New underwear
  • Pots and pans
  • Small kitchen appliances
  • Men's shoes
  • Plus-sized clothes

House by the Side of the Road provides free clothing and small household items to people in need.
