The purpose of House by the Side of the Road is to provide clothing and small household items at no charge to children and adults. These services are free to clients with limited funds for clothing, bedding, and other household essentials. People come in after family breakup, job loss, fire, or prolonged illness. We also serve those who are homeless, those who are reentering society from prison, people with mental health issues, recent immigrants, and migrant workers.

Our Purpose

We have rooms of toys, shoes, clothing (including coats, hats, and gloves) for toddlers, children, and adults, bedding, and household items. All are available free, without qualification. There are limits to how many items may be taken at once and how often individuals may return. Call 734 769 4085 for more information. Leave a detailed message (including a call back number) if we are unavailable to take your call.

We will accept shoes, small appliances, pots and pans, household items, towels, bedding and linens, but no clothes!

Our expanded space (adding the second floor of 2051 South State) and ending the requirement for appointments (both for serving clients and accepting donations) has increased our workload.  Loyal volunteers are working hard to serve our clients efficiently. We have opportunities for additional volunteers and welcome your participation. Call the House at the number below and leave a message including your name and phone number. Someone will return your call to determine how you can best assist us with our mission. We prefer volunteers come on a regular day and time.
